THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM: FOR YOUR CHILD

"Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission:(Catechism of the Catholic Church 1213)

It is wonderful news that you would like to have your child Baptised. Baptism marks a special moment of the beginning of friendship with Christ, welcoming your child into the Catholic Church.

We prepare for the Baptism of a child in three stages:

Baptism

Parents, you are the first and primary Catechists of your Child. Your faith and faith experience is so important. Come along to Mass each Sunday, pray for your child and spend time asking for Mary's intercession as you begin this process.

We pray: O Heavenly Father,
I commend my children unto Thee.
Be Thou their God and Father;
and mercifully supply whatever is wanting in me
through frailty or negligence.
Strengthen them to overcome the corruptions of the world,
to resist all solicitations to evil,
whether from within or without;
and deliver them from the secret snares of the enemy.
Pour Thy grace into their hearts,
and confirm and multiply in them the gifts of Thy Holy Spirit,
that they may daily grow in grace
and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ;
and so, faithfully serving Thee here,
may come to rejoice in Thy presence hereafter.
Amen.

stage 2

The next stage is to come along to one of our monthly Baptism Preparation Courses. This is one session, which takes place on a Monday in the Upper Room (our Church Hall). These are run by Linda and Derek and during the session you will explore the wonders of the Sacrament of Baptism, the role of the parents and Godparents. The session takes about 90 minutes. You will also be given a form to fill in which you can give to Fr Nixon at Mass.

Our next Baptism Preparation Course is on Monday 14th October at 7.30pm in the Upper Room.

Expectant parents and God parents very welcome too, as are babies. Booking is not essential but we are always grateful to know in advance if you are coming.

       stage 3

After you have attended the preparation session, you will make contact with Fr Nixon who will arrange time with him to complete your instruction and formation in readiness for your child's Baptism. He will also organise the date for your child's Baptism.

FAQ's:

1. Do both parents have to be Catholic?

No, it happens often that only one parent is Catholic. It also happens often that when going through the Baptism preparation process, the non-Catholic parent also wants to become Catholic which is always wonderful news. In which case, you would be welcome to join our RCIA programme. Please speak to Fr Nixon about this.

2. Do the Godparents have to be Catholic?

The Godparents role is so important, they promise to help raise the child in the faith. Therefore they should be practising confirmed Catholics over the age of 16. If you don't know anyone who could be a Godparent please do speak to Fr Nixon about this.

3. How long does the Baptism take?

It normally takes around 30-45 minutes if the Baptism takes place outside of the Sunday Mass. If it takes place during the Sunday Mass, it is in the middle of the Mass and it will last around an hour or so.
